East Asian Culture intrigues with its mysteries and traditions. To understand it better, one should find those who experienced and perceived this flamboyant culture. In our society, it is the immigrants who could share this knowledge and introduce the various concepts of a certain culture that other people learn in the class. Thus, it was decided to interview the Chinese immigrants in order to collect accurate information for a better understanding of the Chinese culture. The received data show the common cultural concepts which are best found in the Spring Festival, Chinese dance, traditional Chinese attire, and the ancient architecture. These are the unique cultural aspects that identify East Asian Culture.
The first example of the culture learned in the class is the concept of the Spring Festival, known as Chinese New Year. The data obtained during the interview explain the concepts of Spring Festival by showing that Chinese New Year is a highly important holiday for the native people. The holiday is determined by Chinese Lunar Calendar that is based on solar and lunar motions. The holiday marks a time when the Chinese honor deities, ancestors, and family. Spring Festival has evolved over the years due to different reasons that are related to the perception of the festival by the participants. The praise of the family and the rest are the main reason why Spring Festival is celebrated. According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2016 is the year of the monkey. The 2016 Spring Festival Gala celebrations were held at the University of Waterloo Chinese Students Association (UWCSSA) where Chinese culture was displayed.
The interviews also explain the concept of the dance which identifies the aspects of Chinese culture. Dance is regarded as a form of expression as it shows the feelings of the people. The forms of dance that the Chinese people perform include the fan dance, the ribbon dance, and the sword dance. What unites the forms of Chinese dance is the smooth and light motion of the performers. The dance movements are peaceful and smooth with very creative choreography. Naturally, the folk dance is the most popular dance form. The folk dance is colorful and rich as it employs various forms and styles. Most dances are thematic because they are performed with the specific message. Although the traditional Chinese dance has been largely preserved, there are elements of western influence.
Chinese dressing is another concept that is explained by the prominent features that have inspired the evolution of Chinese attire. The traditional Chinese attire represents an integral part of the Chinese culture. The traditional attire is not only fashionable but also unique. Different dynasties had distinctive clothes that reflected their culture. With time, the traditional outfit had changed. According to the data, the features, such as design, decoration, appearance, cutting, and color, may have changed, but the attire remains stylish and classic. For every occasion and ceremony, there is a special costume to wear.
